Jorge Caballero will teach two Masterclasses this week before his concert on Friday night at 8 pm in Dohnanyi Recital Hall, FSU.

Guitarist and composer Jorge Caballero is the youngest musician and the only guitarist to win the Naumburg International Competition Award, one of the most prestigious and coveted awards given to performers of any instrument, and comparable to the Pulitzer Prize for musicians. He is known for his dazzling virtuosity, his intense musicality and his spellbinding performances.
His program at FSU will a selection of works by Isaac Albeniz, a sonata by Wolfgang A. Mozart, and Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest P. Moussorgsky which was arranged for the guitar by the incomparable Kazuhito Yamashita.
Widely regarded as one of the finest guitarists of his generation, Allan Kozinn of the New York Times called him a “superb young guitarist” and praised his rare combination of “a deft, powerful technique and a soft-spoken interpretive persona.”

Mr. Caballero has performed as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the New York Chamber Symphony, the Naples Philharmonic and the Presidential Symphony of Ankara, Turkey, among others. His recital appearances include performances at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, the Library of Congress in Washington (in the historic Great Performers Series), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, the Da Camera Society in Los Angeles and other venues in the United States and internationally. Recent performances include recitals at the Santo Tirso Guitar Festival in Portugal, as well as concerts in Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and Mexico.
Mr. Caballero was featured as the center artist for the production of “Austin Pictures,” one of the largest events ever produced featuring a solo classical guitar. The production took place at the Austin City Limits Live Theater and it involved visual arts, film, and Mr. Caballero’s performance of Modest Mussorgsky’s iconic work “Pictures at an Exhibition.” The show was broadcasted live on National Public Radio (KUT 90.5 FM Austin), and on KLRU (PBS) National Television later.
In 2009, Mr. Caballero was called at the last minute to replace John Williams at the 18th edition of the Iserlohn Guitar Symposium, one of the most important guitar festivals in Europe. Reviews of the concert state that “From the first note, [Mr. Caballero] revealed a perfect mastery of guitar and music.” Another critic said: “If I had not shaken hands with him, I would not have had the certainty of having seen a human being… The guitar proved to be a universal instrument with unlimited possibilities of orchestration and better than any other instrument.”
Mr. Caballero recorded Antonin Dvorak’s “New World” Symphony transcribed for solo guitar, a work that he is one of only two guitarists in the world to perform. His Musical Heritage CD of Bach Cello Suites, recorded in 2000, was highly praised by critics, drawing comparisons to Casals, Rostropovich and Segovia. He recently recorded “Alba,” a one-movement work by American Composer Mark N. Grant, released last year on Albany Records. A recording of Bach keyboard works is in the planning stages, as well as a recording of Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata Op. 1, also arranged by Mr. Caballero, and arguably one of the most important works ever arranged for the guitar. Earlier this year, Mr. Caballero was featured playing a 1940 Hauser I guitar (formerly played by Julian Bream) in three videos produced by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A native of Lima, Peru, Mr. Caballero comes from a musical family. His mother is a well-known singer in Peru and as a child he spent many evenings sitting backstage at her concerts. He learned to play guitar from his father, but he had already absorbed much knowledge about the instrument from listening to his father give lessons. Growing up at a time when terrorists in Peru bombed electrical stations, he became an expert at practicing in the dark.
He began his professional training at the National Conservatory in Lima, studying with Oscar Zamora. He later studied in the United States, where he attended the Manhattan School of Music. He is the recipient of top prizes at the Tokyo International Guitar Competition, the Luis Sigall Competition, and the First Latin American Guitar Competition, in addition to the Naumburg, which he won in 1996 at age 19.
Mr. Caballero’s repertoire is notable for its breadth and scope: When he applied to the conservatory, his teacher suggested that perhaps he should list the pieces that he did not play, since there were so few of them. It ranges from Bach to Ginastera, from Paganini to Ponce, from Scarlatti and Dowland to Giuliani and Legnani, from Renaissance pieces for the vihuela to modern composers like Carter, Berio and Ferneyhough.

In truth, had we not seen it with our own eyes, we would hardly believe by the mere hearing of it that this was only one guitar. Jorge Caballero impressed us with everything that a guitarist could. He has perfect technique and plays at a pace that’s spellbinding. He can also impress us with expression and loveliness, as well as stunning strength. At its most sensational is probably his command of voice leading that simply often sounds like two or three guitars and not one. The virtuoso’s was the last concert of the current Guitar-Symposium on Friday night – the first time in the Gold Room of the Schauburg – in which the ears of listeners spread the multilayered vocal weave of a five-part Bach fugue, perfectly clear and transparent with only six strings, and unmatched.

Classic guitar virtuoso Kevin Manderville returns to the Mattie Kelly Arts Center for a Guest Artist Recital on Friday, October 9 at 7:30 pm in the Tyler Recital Hall. The event is free of charge with donations accepted at the door and is sponsored by the Fine & Performing Arts Division of Northwest Florida State College. Seating is limited and doors will open at 7:00 pm for first come seating.
Dr. Kevin Manderville of Montgomery, Alabama is an active solo recitalist, chamber musician, teacher and scholar, Manderville has appeared in major cities and festivals throughout North America and Europe, including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, and has won top prizes at several international competitions.

Kevin Manderville began his classical guitar studies at the age of 18 under Jimmy Chandler’s direction (when Chandler was a guitar instructor in Jacksonville). Kevin Manderville received the Bachelor of Music degree from Stetson University, where he studied with Stephen Robinson. He also received the Master of Music and Doctor of Music degrees from Florida State University under the tutelage of renowned pedagogue Bruce Holzman. In addition, Mr. Manderville has also studied in master classes with some of today’s most prominent guitarists, including Sergio and Odair Assad, Manuel Barrueco, Eliot Fisk, Roland Dyens, and Oscar Ghiglia.
Kevin Manderville has won prizes in several international competitions, including first prize at the Concours International de Guitare de Lachine, second prize at the Rantucci International Guitar Competition and consecutive top prizes at the Columbus Guitar Symposium Competition. In 2006, he was a recipient of the Florida Artist Enhancement Grant.
His performance as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, and former member of the Tantalus Quartet have taken him throughout North America and Europe, including appearances in such major cities as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Montreal, Cologne, New Orleans, Miami and Orlando. He has also performed at major venues, concert series and festivals including Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, the Guitar Foundation of America International Convention, the Iserlohn International Guitar Symposium, the 2nd Acadia International Guitar Festival, the Hamilton International Guitar Festival, the Columbus State University Guitar Symposium, the New York Guitar Seminar, and the Lachine International Music Festival. Committed to the performance of new music, he has premiered several works including those written for him. His debut CD, titled Through the Centuries, was released in the fall of 2010 on Clear Note.
A dedicated teacher, Dr. Manderville served as a teaching assistant at Florida State University for three years. He has also been on the faculty of Thomas University, Tallahassee Community College, Bainbridge College and the Stetson University Community School of Music. While living in New York, he taught at Medgar Evers College, the Amadeus Conservatory of Music, and initiated an after-school guitar program for Manhattan Youth. He also serves on the Guitar Foundation of America’s Education Committee. Kevin Manderville currently resides in Montgomery, AL, where he directs the classical guitar program at Carver Elementary Arts Magnet School and is on the faculty at Huntingdon College.

Michael Morgan and Benjamin Lougheed were Concert Prize Winners of the 2014 CGST International Guitar Competition held in December of 2014. Michael Morgan began his guitar studies at the age of thirteen with David Hoge at the David Hoge Guitar Studio in Tallahassee, Florida. He continued his guitar studies at Leon High School with Ed Prasse and was a three-year member and student director of Frets, the advanced guitar ensemble at Leon High School. He was an inaugural member of the Florida Music Educator’s Association All-State Guitar Ensemble, as well as a member for the next two years until his graduation in 2013. He has studied privately with several FSU alumni, including Dr. Eric Robles, Dr. Adam Foster, and Dr. Stephen Robinson. He has participated in masterclasses with Pavel Steidl and Jorge Caballero at the Domaine Forget in Quebec, and was a prize winner in the first Classical Guitar Society of Tallahassee International Competition. He is currently pursuing Bachelor’s degrees in Music Performance and Music Education with Bruce Holzman at Florida State University. Michael will perform works by Frederico Moreno Torroba and Johann Sebastian Bach. Benjamin Lougheed attended the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with world-renowned teacher and current department chair Julian Gray, earning his Bachelor’s of Music in Guitar Performance with honors. He is currently completing his Masters of Music in Guitar Performance at Florida State, where he is studying with Bruce Holzman, who was recently inducted into the Guitar Foundation of America Hall of Fame. He has participated in master classes with several of the most accomplished guitarists in the world, including Jason Vieaux, Ana Vidovic, Denis Azabagic, and Paul Galbraith. Benjamin will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Roland Dyens.

The FSU College of Music and the Classical Guitar Society of Tallahassee will present the internationally renowned Amadeus Guitar Duo featuring Dale Kavanagh and Thomas Kirchhoff in concert on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 8:00 pm. The performance will take place in Dohnanyi Recital Hall inside the Housewright Music Building at the corner of Copeland and Call Streets. The Amadeus Duo will present two masterclasses on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm at the College of Music. Admission to the concert is $10 general admission at the door, and the masterclasses will be free to audit.
Dale Kavanagh (Canada) & Thomas Kirchhoff (Germany) of the Amadeus Guitar Duo have been performing together since 1991. Their program will feature music from Europe and South America and includes “Madrigal Suite” by the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo, “Introduccion y Forreando Caprichoso” by the Bolivian composer Jaime M. Zenamon, and “Amasur” by Alfonso Montes (also Bolivian) as well as works by George Friedrich Händel (Germany) and Mario Gangi (Italy).
Favorites of Tallahassee audiences, the Amadeus Guitar Duo has appeared several times at FSU as guest artists. Of their return engagement, Bruce Holzman, Associate Professor of Guitar at FSU said, “We are again lucky to have Dale and Thomas back to perform. Each time they have played for us, the audiences have left wanting more. Their performances are dynamic, exciting and are at the highest level of artistic achievement.” Their stop at FSU is one of many in their 2014-2015 tour which includes performances in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Canada, Austria, United States, South Korea, China, Thailand, England, Turkey, Romania, and Greece. In addition to their extensive tours and recording schedule where they have produced 16 titles on the Haenssler-Classic FONO label, both Kavanagh and Kirchhoff teach at the Musikhochschule in Detmold, Germany and have established one of the largest classical guitar summer festivals in Iserlohn, Germany.

Kevin Ginty is an active classical guitarist, teacher, and arts administrator in the Tallahassee community. In 2010, Kevin moved from his hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada to Tallahassee in order to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Guitar Performance from the College of Music at Florida State University. During his time as an undergraduate at FSU, Kevin co-founded The Classical Guitar Society at Florida State University (CGS@FSU) and was one of a select few undergraduate students to take private lessons with renowned pedagogue Bruce Holzman.
Upon graduating in the spring of 2014, Kevin was offered an administrative assistantship to complete a Master’s of Arts in Arts Administration at FSU. This unique degree program allows Kevin to learn vital skills in non-profit arts management, while still maintaining his craft as a musician. Kevin hopes to use these professional abilities to help create a thriving community for classical guitar in Tallahassee.
Kevin’s program will include works by Leo Brouwer, Issac Albeniz, and Joaquin Rodrigo.
Steven Jay Lerman began studying classical guitar at the age of 16 in San Diego, CA. Just 3 years later Steven was offered a full-tuition music scholarship to attend the University of Arizona’s world renowned Bolton Guitar Studies program. During his undergraduate study, Steven served as the artistic director for the Tucson Guitar Society, was a member of the Tucson Guitar Orchestra, taught in public schools throughout Arizona, and managed a private lessons studio.
In 2012 Steven was awarded a research grant that paid for travel to Canada to study with Grammy-Award-Winning Brazilian guitarist and composer Sergio Assad. The following year he was invited to present his research at the University of Arizona research exposition, and was subsequently one of only four chosen to be featured researchers.
Steven is a frequent competition participant. He has won 3 and reached the finals of 12 classical guitar competitions, winning over $15,000 in cash and prizes. Steven has performed in masterclasses for some of the most important classical guitar figures including: David Russell, the Assad brothers, Solo Duo, Nicholas Goluses, Rene Izquierdo, Johannes Moller, Vladimir Gorbach, Marcin Dylla, Carlos Perez, Carlos Bonnell, Anton Baranov, and Pavel Steidl. Steven has been able to study privately with Thomas Viloteau, Tom Patterson, and Bruce Holzman; some of the top teachers in the world. Steven is currently finishing his Master’s of Music degree at Florida State University and working as a graduate assistant.
Steve’s program will include works by J.K. Mertz, J.S. Bach, and Joaquin Turina.
